Understand parent groups, works and the historical company-name traps.

Understanding the level of a name prevents some of the most expensive mistakes in Chinese steel sourcing. A quotation may identify a holding company, while the quality certificate names a mill several levels below it. A corporate relationship shows common ownership; it does not prove a specific technical approval.

A practical hierarchy

Ownership examples

CITIC: The ultimate steel-related parent is not the same thing as the listed CITIC Pacific Special Steel. TPCO is the seamless-tube example; NISCO is a separate Nanjing operating story. Daye requires special attention because the former listed-company name and current group name can otherwise be conflated.

Ansteel: Benxi and Pangang are separate production systems despite ownership ties with Ansteel.

Shagang: The Fushun Special Steel direct-shareholder change announced in January 2025 illustrates why a dated share register matters; Dongbei Special Steel remains relevant historically.

Shandong: Shandong Steel Rizhao and Rizhao Steel Holding are unrelated producers sharing a geographic identifier. Do not merge them in a mill database.

Verification workflow

  1. Obtain the exact Chinese legal company name and registration record.
  2. Identify steel-melting, casting, rolling and final pipe/fabrication sites separately where relevant.
  3. Match the MTC issuer and heat identity to the actual source.
  4. Determine applicable product standard, grade, size range and delivery condition.
  5. Verify current API, classification-society, CE/FPC and client AML/AVL scope for that site and product.
  6. Check whether historic names appear on old stock certificates and do not assume a corporate takeover invalidates old material documentation.
