NISCO is the common international name for Nanjing Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. The company is a useful example of why Chinese mill names can be confusing: older records may refer to Nanjing Iron & Steel Group, Nanjing Iron & Steel United, Nanjing Nangang Iron & Steel United or NISCO International. Those names are related, but they are not automatically the same legal entity.

Historical and ownership context

Nanjing's steel operation dates to 1958. The business went through several restructurings, listed Nanjing Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. in 2000 and later operated for years under a Fosun-linked ownership structure. In 2023 control moved to CITIC.

Today the safest procurement shorthand is: NISCO is the operating steelmaker; CITIC is the ultimate group owner; NISCO International is the export/trading platform. NISCO should not be confused with CITIC Pacific Special Steel or TPCO.

Products and scale

NISCO is especially relevant for heavy plate and special long products. Its public portfolio includes structural plate, shipbuilding/offshore plate, line-pipe plate, pressure-vessel plate, bridge and wind-power steel, high-strength/low-temperature plate, special bar and other engineering steels.

NISCO's official profile states roughly 10 Mt/year steelmaking capacity.

Offshore and international approvals

Public product information includes EN 10225 grades and API offshore plate such as API 2H/2W/2Y. NISCO also reports approvals or certification experience with major classification societies. Its quality systems include ISO 9001, IATF 16949, API Spec Q1 and ISO 22163 within their respective scopes.

NISCO International publicly reports relationships with major international energy and EPC organizations, but those statements should not be treated as universal current AVL approval. Approval can be limited by works, product, grade, thickness and project.

Procurement takeaway

When buying NISCO material, identify the exact manufacturer, manufacturing site, MTC issuer and current product/customer approval. Do not assume every CITIC-owned producer shares NISCO's certifications.

What to reverify before an RFQ or PO

  • exact legal manufacturer and works;
  • current parent/ownership structure where relevant;
  • current production range and size limits;
  • ISO/API/class/CE/PED/FPC certificate scope and validity;
  • current customer/EPC AVL/AML approval;
  • seller/trading entity versus MTC issuer.
