Hunan Steel Group: Valin history, Xiangtan, Lianyuan and Hengyang explained

Hunan Steel Group (Hunan Iron and Steel Group) is a group-level owner and organizer of several important Chinese steel production businesses. International traders still frequently use the historic Valin name; it is not safe to assume Valin, Hunan Steel, Xiangtan and Hengyang are one legal producer.

Formation and name changes

The provincial steel combination was established in 1997 by bringing together Xiangtan Iron & Steel, Lianyuan Iron & Steel and Hengyang Iron & Steel. The Valin label became prominent in group and listed-company names. Recent official provincial information uses Hunan Iron and Steel Group, while the listed manufacturer platform continues to use Valin-related corporate branding and stock code 000932.SZ.

Products and locations

Xiangtan is especially relevant to heavy plate and long products; Lianyuan/Lengshuijiang to flat-rolled products; Hengyang to seamless pipe. Across the group, Hunan public information describes heavy and wide plate, thin hot/cold rolled sheet, seamless tubes and bars/wire rod. worldsteel reports 22.60 Mt crude steel output for 2025 at group level; this is not the volume of any one works.

Approval and procurement context

A customer's approved-vendor list may name Xiangtan for plate but not Hengyang for tubes—or the opposite. Some published documents identify group holding companies whereas the MTC identifies the operating production business. Neither parent-level capability nor Valin-brand recognition automatically validates individual API, EN, class or EPC approvals.

Procurement takeaway

First establish which product and which works: Xiangtan plate, Lianyuan flat products or Hengyang seamless tubes. Match the actual legal manufacturer, MTC and plant-specific approvals.

What to reverify before an RFQ or PO

• Exact legal manufacturer, works and MTC issuer; do not rely on a group or export-trader name alone.
• Current ownership, name changes and the legal entity named on original certificates.
• Product-by-product manufacturing route, grade, OD/thickness or section range, heat treatment and available tests.
• Valid ISO, API, class-society, CE/FPC, PED or other certificates for the exact works and scope, where relevant.
• Current EPC/customer approved-vendor status, which is not established by generic marketing claims.
• Seller/export company versus actual manufacturer, and EN 10204 certificate availability.
