API 5L offshore-service pipe requirements

public-source-checked; licensed-standard confirmation required before publication

A buyer-focused checklist for ordering API 5L line pipe for offshore service without assuming that base PSL2 automatically covers every offshore requirement.

Ordering API 5L pipe for offshore service usually requires more than writing “API 5L PSL2” on the RFQ.

The base specification establishes the line-pipe framework. Offshore projects can then add supplementary requirements for toughness, NDT, manufacturing qualification, dimensional control, traceability, sour service or other service-specific needs.

Start with the correct API 5L edition

API published API Spec 5L, 47th Edition, in June 2026. Edition control matters because annex structures and detailed requirements can change between editions.

If a project specification was written around the 46th edition, do not silently reinterpret annex references using the 47th edition. Clarify the contractual basis.

PSL2 is often the starting point, not the finish line

PSL2 introduces tighter and more extensive requirements than PSL1, but “PSL2” alone does not answer every offshore question.

See API 5L PSL1 vs PSL2.

A complete offshore RFQ should identify, where applicable:

  • grade and delivery condition, e.g. normalized, quenched-and-tempered or thermomechanically processed route;
  • seamless, HFW/ERW, SAWL or SAWH manufacturing route;
  • OD, wall thickness and length;
  • applicable offshore-service annex / project supplementary requirements;
  • Charpy testing temperature, orientation and acceptance criteria;
  • NDT method, coverage and acceptance criteria;
  • hydrostatic test requirements under the applicable edition;
  • dimensional tolerances;
  • sour-service requirements if relevant;
  • inspection certificate and TPI involvement;
  • marking and traceability;
  • any MPQT/MPS/project qualification requirements.

Annex J and offshore service

Historically, API 5L Annex J has been associated with offshore-service pipe requirements in the 46th-edition framework. Because API 5L 47th edition introduced technical revisions, always verify the current edition before carrying an old annex reference forward.

See API 5L Annex J for offshore service.

Delivery condition is part of the grade definition

For PSL2 grades, suffixes such as N, Q and M carry manufacturing/delivery-condition meaning. They are not decorative letters.

For the distinction, see API 5L grade suffixes.

NDT must be stated precisely

“100% UT” is not enough. The RFQ should identify:

  • what is being examined — body, weld seam, pipe ends, laminations;
  • method — UT/AUT, RT or other method as permitted;
  • applicable API annex / referenced NDT standard;
  • acceptance criteria;
  • calibration and personnel qualification requirements where project-specific.

For an example of why annex selection matters, see API 5L Annex E vs Annex K.

Offshore structural tubular is not automatically API 5L

A structural tubular member and a hydrocarbon line pipe can have similar dimensions yet belong to different product standards. Some offshore structures use EN 10225 tubular material or project-specific structural pipe instead of API 5L.

See API 5L vs EN 10225 for offshore structural tubulars.

Procurement takeaway

Treat “API 5L PSL2 offshore” as the beginning of the specification, not the completed specification. Capture the exact edition, grade suffix, manufacturing route, supplementary requirements, NDT, toughness, certification and project qualification requirements before asking a mill to quote.
