The headline number is not the story

On 16 October 2026 Mysteel's national spiral welded pipe (螺旋管) assessment put the 28-city average for 219×6 mm at 3,738 yuan/t and for 720×8 mm at 3,692 yuan/t, each down 1 yuan/t day-on-day. That is a 0.027% move. Mysteel's own flash language — 微幅下跌, "marginally lower" — concedes as much. Anyone trading off a one-yuan average change is trading noise.

The more interesting fact is structural: the page is titled 甘孜螺旋管价格 (Ganzi spiral pipe prices), yet not a single quote on it is from Ganzi. Ganzi is the Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in western Sichuan — remote, high-altitude, with pipeline and infrastructure demand but no pipe mills and no Mysteel assessment point. What the page actually aggregates is the standard national Mysteel dataset: Shanghai, Chengdu, Kunming, Urumqi, plus a reverse-chronological flash feed and a scroll of daily commentaries. It is a search-engine landing page wearing a local-market title.

That matters for anyone using Chinese price aggregators: keyword pages are not market reports. A buyer sourcing for a Ganzi project who reads 3,738 as "the Ganzi price" is reading a 28-city mean, before freight into western Sichuan — which for 219×6 mm pipe from Chengdu or Kunming is not a rounding error.

Two methodological traps sit inside this table.

Weigh basis. Every quote is on an actual-weighed (过磅) basis except Kunming's 720×8 line from Yunnan Gangyou, which is theoretical-weight (理计). For spiral pipe, actual weight typically runs a few percent above theoretical depending on wall-thickness tolerance and standard — SY/T 5037 permits negative wall tolerance. So the 3,800 理计 in Kunming is not directly comparable with 3,930 过磅 in Shanghai for a similar heavy-wall spec. Any regional-arbitrage read across this page needs the basis adjustment first; ignoring it manufactures spreads that do not exist.

Brand and location premia. Shanghai's 219×6 prints at two levels one day: 4,000 from Tianjin Youfa and 3,930 from Hengshui Jinghua. That 70 yuan/t is a pure brand/relationship premium on an identical spec in one city. Meanwhile the 28-city average of 3,738 sits 262 yuan/t (7.0%) below the Youfa Shanghai quote — a normal combination of brand premium, Shanghai logistics cost and the drag of lower-priced northern mills in the mean. None of this is contradictory; it is what a national average is made of.

Kunming's +20 is a regional signal worth noting

Kunming rose 20 yuan/t while the national average slipped 1. With only four cities quoted in the flash feed, this is the single genuine divergence of the session. A plausible arithmetic check (my own estimate, not Mysteel's): if Kunming carried roughly 1/28 weight in the average, its +20 would add about +0.7 yuan/t, meaning the other 27 cities collectively contributed about −1.7 yuan/t to net at −1. That is consistent with the page's own commentary — most regions holding, a handful of small declines (Daqiuzhuang −10 yuan/t on 14 October, Cangzhou softer).

Southwest China holding a premium while the north drifts is a recurring pattern: Yunnan and Sichuan mills face higher inbound raw-material cost and a thinner local supplier base than the Bohai Rim cluster. The Kunming move is small, but it points the right way.

October is behaving like September

The commentary trail on the page is more informative than the averages. Mysteel's writers used the phrase "十月旺季不旺" — the October peak season is not behaving like one — on 12 October, with futures up but spot volumes anaemic and hot-rolled coil and strip prices easing. The 14 October daily noted post-holiday demand fatigue, weak order books and traders running low inventory and turning stock quickly rather than restocking.

The pattern is consistent across the North China flashes: mainstream 720×8 quotes from Daqiuzhuang, Cangzhou, Tangshan and Taiyuan clustering at 3,500–3,640 yuan/t, a discount of roughly 50–190 yuan/t to the 3,692 national average. That is what it looks like when the low-cost production base is holding prices down against a soft demand backdrop, with coke price cuts eroding cost support and mills running at reduced utilisation.

For steel pipe buyers — particularly for water, drainage, piling casing and low-pressure gas service where Q235B / SY/T 5037-2023 material is the standard specification — the practical read is that there is no near-term cost-driven squeeze. The list price is flat, the northern mills are discounting to move volume, and the raw-material complex (HRC, strip, billet, coke) is drifting lower. Procurement teams with flexibility on timing have leverage; those with fixed project schedules should be locking in delivered prices from the lowest-cost regional mill, not chasing the average.

What to watch

The one-yuan average move is a placeholder. The questions that matter over the next few sessions: whether Kunming's +20 extends to Chengdu and signals a genuine southwest firming; whether northern mills cut production further rather than accept deeper discounts; and whether HRC futures hold above the recent range, since spiral pipe pricing follows hot-rolled substrate with a lag. Until any of those breaks, the honest description of the Chinese spiral pipe market on 16 October 2026 is flat, well-supplied and soft on demand — priced close to cost, with regional dispersion doing more work than the national average.
