A single day of unchanged prices is usually noise. But on 16 October 2026, Mysteel recorded Q10 ductile pig iron flat in every region it surveys — Xinjiang, the three Liaoning works, Linzhou and Huangshi, Wu'an and Linfen, and the East China band — with South China's headline assessment at 2,960 yuan/t, change zero. When eight or nine independently assessed production clusters move in lockstep, the flatness itself is the data point.

What was actually assessed

All figures are Mysteel daily assessments, cash, tax-inclusive (现款含税):

Region / locationQ10 (yuan/t)Change
South China (headline)2,9600
Northwest — Xinjiang2,8100
Northeast — Benxi / Liaoyang / Haicheng2,950 / 2,930 / 2,9500
East China2,950–3,290 (per-order negotiation)0
Central — Linzhou / Huangshi2,970 / 2,8600
North — Wu'an / Linfen3,000 / 3,0300

Two things stand out. First, the national spread is only 220 yuan/t between the Xinjiang low (2,810) and the Linfen high (3,030) — about 7.5% of the mid-price. For a bulky, low-value-to-weight product with meaningful inland freight costs, that is a tight envelope, and it implies logistics are either unusually cheap or, more plausibly, that regional producers are pricing to protect local share rather than arbitraging geography.

Second, the median of the nine point quotes is 2,950 yuan/t, and South China at 2,960 sits within 10 yuan/t of it. That is analytically interesting. South China — Guangdong in particular — is a structural deficit region for merchant iron, historically carrying a freight and scarcity premium to northern levels. On this day it does not: it is 40 yuan/t below Wu'an and 70 yuan/t below Linfen. Either the premium has been competed away by local capacity, or northern mills are discounting into a soft market to hold volume.

The East China band is the anomaly worth watching

A 340 yuan/t range (2,950–3,290) flagged as "steady" and qualified as 一单一议 (price agreed order-by-order) is not a clean assessment — it is a working range that almost certainly spans different specifications, delivery bases or nodularity/manganese guarantees. Readers should treat the East China top end with caution; the 2,950 floor is the more meaningful reference for commodity-grade Q10.

Note also a comparability trap: quotes are VAT-inclusive and cash-on-delivery. Any comparison with export offers or with ex-works net-of-VAT pricing needs a 13% VAT adjustment to be meaningful.

Why flat, everywhere, in October

The pattern points to a market where neither side has leverage:

  • Demand side. Q10 feeds ductile iron castings — pipe and fittings for water and gas networks, municipal infrastructure, automotive and wind components. October is a normal working month, but Chinese foundry order books have been soft through the construction-adjacent segments, so foundries buy to order rather than to stock. No restocking impulse, no upward pressure.
  • Cost side. Coke and iron ore have been relatively firm (coke benchmarks have ticked up in recent sessions), giving producers a cost floor that discourages cuts. So mills hold price and accept thinner volumes rather than chase market share with visible discounts.
  • Result. A stalemate expressed as universal flatness — cost support below, demand resistance above.

That is a stabler configuration than it looks. It typically precedes a break in one direction once either scrap/coke costs move decisively or infrastructure pipe demand turns. For Q10 specifically, the trigger to watch is foundry utilisation in the pipe-casting belt; for merchant iron generally, it is the coke–ore spread.

A caveat on the source page

Mysteel's aggregation page carries archived weekly commentary whose Q10 levels (Henan ~3,750, Benxi ~3,780, Wu'an ~4,430, Linfen ~4,830) sit 800–1,800 yuan/t above the current daily assessments. Those weeklies are undated within the page and clearly belong to a different — much higher — price regime. Do not read them as recent history or as a forecast of reversion. The daily assessments (2,810–3,290) are the only figures here that should be used for current analysis.

Takeaway for buyers and sellers

For procurement teams, the message is that this is a buyer-tilted plateau with no regional arbitrage worth chasing: freight will eat the 220 yuan/t national spread. For producers, the risk is that the flat price is masking volume loss, and the exposure is any further softening in casting orders. The market is quiet, not balanced — and quiet Q10 markets in China have historically resolved on the cost side first.
